Singing

We would just like to make one thing clear. Most people believe that just because someone is an opera singer they can only teach opera or classical singing. This is NOT true. A singers’ capabilities depend on their age, training and voice type, if they only like singing pop music either Ed Sheran or Katey Perry there’s nothing wrong with that as long as it’s done safely, we can hear every word and is in tune. If students wish to do classical voice or VCE singing that is also on the menu, as well as teaching them how to read music, learn aurally, find their notes on a piano and how to act (if so desired). Learning how to read music is a skill that will take time; however, if it really isn’t needed or is beyond the students’ capabilities for any reason only the basics will be taught.

Young singers (7-14) don’t have to do singing exams if they don’t want to, the voice takes years to develop and it’s best to let them sing what they love and train what can be trained in the meantime. For example- While many of us have developed a taste for singing through singing along to the radio our ear isn’t 100% accurate, very often we make mistakes and we don’t even know we’re making them because no one says anything, therefore its important to work on diction (the words being able to be heard clearly across a room) and pitch (making sure the notes are sung in tune). For beginners this is essential, for those more advanced and wishing to take singing more seriously and further than just the basics these are some of the skills that shall be taught-(again these depend on the age, and level of training  the student already possesses) the ability to recognise different styles and to sing them if possible, languages, sight reading, rhythms and beat hierarchy, pitch, breathing and research into your chosen piece and composer etc.
